FISHING WITH THE GUIDES with George Langley - WEEK OF 12/14 to 12/21

Ice season is heating up across the Northwoods, and the stretch of colder weather we had last week has firmed things up. Even with improving conditions, we’re still hearing the occasional story that reminds everyone this is early ice. Progress is being made, but it’s uneven, and patience and caution is still required.

Ice thickness continues to vary widely. Some of the larger lakes that were still open during our last “snowstorm” have actually developed the nicest ice – but again, do not rely on what you’re told. Carry your spud and safety picks, check as you go and be sure of what you’re standing on. Most anglers who are getting out are reporting roughly 3 to 8+ inches. We’re expecting some warmer temps and possible snow mid-week this week, which won’t help - but it shouldn’t hurt, as nighttime temps are still well below freezing.

Walleye action has remained solid. We’re just now seeing folks able to get out a little deeper, but shallow fishing reports are still good. Tip-ups baited with medium shiners or sucker minnows have been producing best during early morning and late afternoon windows, with good after-dark action, too. Jigging continues to work as well, with rattle spoons drawing fish in and smaller, subtle jigs sealing the deal when they’re hesitant. As access improves and anglers can reach deeper edges, the bite should continue to expand.

Northern pike reports are increasing as ice thickness allows anglers to push a little farther out. Early-season pike are sticking tight to green weeds, and tip-ups set along those edges have been effective. Large shiners and suckers remain the standard offering, and action should improve steadily as more of the weed lines become reachable.

Panfish continue to be the most reliable option. Bluegills are holding shallow in protected bays and weed pockets, and the bite has been consistent. Small jigs tipped with waxies or spikes are working well. Some anglers are starting to mix in crappie minnows, especially during low-light periods, and we’re beginning to hear a few early crappie reports where anglers can access slightly deeper water. Mixing active jigging with a dead-stick has been a productive approach.

As ice continues to build we can safely report the start of the season has been a great success. This early-season calm doesn’t last long, and soon we’ll see UTVs and snowmobiles out as conditions trend in the right direction. Take it slow, stay safe, and enjoy these early, quiet days on the ice.

Good luck and good fishin’!
